Mankie hankies, switches and unorthodox cotton tips

Single-use switches

That not so easy to switch.

Switches.

During my eco-luxe journey, I have tried some, what I thought at the time were unorthodox products, practices, and methods. Most of the tried and tested practices are now daily rituals and some of the products I now use or don’t use are now my ‘normal’. Some switches have sent me into eco-paralysis. Yep, eco-paralysis is a thing!

One switch I have completed which I was pleasantly surprised by is period underwear. Rather than being a challenging switch, it has actually been freeing. The only challenge was choosing a brand and getting the size correct.

I have switched shampoo and conditioner to soap bars, laundry detergent to soap nuts, and tea bags to tea stirrers, just to name a few. The only switches that I am really really reluctant to entertain and almost avoiding are cotton buds or tips and tissues. Toilet paper I am afraid I just can’t switch unless I move to Europe or India and get a Bidet, toilet paper is here to stay.

Cotton buds/tips I may be able to swap for reusable ones. If at home I can clean and sanitize these. I know there is a school of thought that cotton buds are bad for your ears, but I’m slightly odd and like the feeling of scratching my ears. Almost like a dog that likes a good scratch! I find it satisfying.

The reason I am reluctant to switch tissues to hankies is they are just mankie. The thought of carrying around your dirty snot in a hankie is just, well ‘gross and disgusting’. A hankie to me is a portable snot holder, full of germs and bacteria. You often have to blow your nose if you are sick, so you are transporting your sickness along with you, not ideal. If at home I guess you could use a hankie and then put it straight in the wash. There are now some brands that have ‘reusable tissues’, but sounds just like a hankie to me. I wonder if the energy consumed from making tissues and the energy consumed to wash hankies or reusable tissues would be the same?

Either way, I just don’t think I can do it. One day cotton buds and tissues may be banned as they are considered a single-use object. Until that day I will not switch to hankies, but have already swapped my tissues for eco-friendly products that don’t freak or gross me out! I will however give reusable cotton tips a go.

If you have made the tissue switch we would love to hear from you. Email us on ciao@levata.life or insta meet us via @levata.life. How did you do it?
